Do you really care, God?
a devotional by BluGnu
Mark 4:37 & 38 reads:
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
This was no mom-wake-up-the-sleeping-kid gentle touch. This was a screaming, yelling, panicked shaking. “Jesus, we’re gonna die! Don’t you care?!” Does God care about our blue days as well as our brighter ones? Did Jesus really care that his closest students were about to drown? Or, would he peacefully sleep on.
In one fluid motion, Jesus got up and told the storminess to stop. And it did. Totally.
In awe, the disciples stared at him. In their eyes, he was a great Teacher, an outcast made out to be a rebel by the religious elite. But, the disciples still hadn’t taken the huge leap of believing that this man was also the divine Creator. That was and still remains a huge jump for most. But, here was just another demonstration, another hint of who he really was. The howling winds and the furious waves were his pieces of clay to break and bring together at will. Standing there, I too would not know what to think. My senses would be numb.
Jesus looks at them and simply says, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
The sleeping master had never lost control. All was fluidly operating, all was for a purpose. How much would it take until the eyes of faith would open and accept the truth they couldn’t see?
Does God really care about your blue days as well as your brighter ones? Has God lost control, or is He purposefully allowing into your life friction to develop character and trust and a growing faith in Him. God knows you individually. God has the best intended for you. Will you let Him accomplish clay molding in your life or will you jump overboard when the storm gets rough?
