Letting Go

By Faith

You can still remember
The first time you two met
One look into his expressive eyes
And you fall, tumbling in

You love the way he reaches out
Shyly for your hand
You love the warmth of his embrace
And the feel of his arms around you

You think of him at night-
Every night
And wake up smiling
With happiness

You can’t imagine life
Without him
And that
Is when it happens

Something changes in him
What, you are unsure
He seems so far away at times
When he is sitting next to you

He doesn’t want to hurt you
He is considerate and sweet
So he never says a word
But you know him all too well

You can tell he is unhappy
You know he is pretending
Yet you hold on foolishly
Selfishly, to him

In your heart you know
But you refuse to accept
You wish you could scream at him
For lying to himself for you

He tries so hard to please you
To act like nothing has changed
But something has, and it’s
Just not the same

You want him to
Look at you
With the eyes that
He once had

As time goes by, you wonder
Am I doing the right thing
To chain him here with me
Instead of letting him fly away?

You’ve seen too much of this at school
Heard the sobbing of your friends
Over the boy they said they loved
Their pain, you now understand

You have made your decision
You know what you must do
You will miss him terribly
But you are doing this for him

You are going to free him
You want him to be happy
“I understand” you tell him
And allow yourself to cry

Though this tears your heart apart
You don’t have any regrets
He had given you so much happiness
It was time to give some back

Because when you love someone
When you truly care
If they want to fly away
You will let them go.
