I Took the Hammer

I took the hammer,
and held it firm;
I took the first swing
at the ugly nail

And then the pounding,
as I swung each time,
Deeper and deeper,
piercing the wood

And then I saw him,
Looking through my eyes;
I hit my finger,
cursed the god of the skies

Why did he make me so?
My life was a mess as though
the gods were all laughing at me--
laughing at man's misery

His eyes were still piercing through mine,
my nails were still piercing through him;
A tear then ran down from his eyes--
"Forgive them--they don't understand"

This man had once made the world shake,
His miracles were told far and wide;
A skeptic I'd been, until this--
What if it all was just true?

A teardrop ran down from my face
 gripped with death;
My hammer struck flesh
as I missed, struck his arm.

"Forgive them--they don't understand"
Surely this man was no man!
The people still screamed for his blood,
I pleaded with him for my soul:

"Forgive me, I don't deserve life,
Jesus, the bleeding One;
Save me, my Lamb of God!
Crucified, Holy One."

My hammer was done,
and the nails did their job;
My hands were bloodstained,
while my face was tearstreaked.

Deity dying,
with the power of a lion,
looked into me,
and forgave all my sins

"Jesus, I now believe,
Your word I now receive,
Your gift of life so free,
I take so willingly."

The people all gawked
at the scene at the cross,
And people still stare
today

We all take that hammer
and force more nails in;
as the Lamb endures
all willingly

But what will you do,
when his eyes pierce through you,
and his hands reach out
holding his gift

The choice is all yours,
as is pounding more nails;
Or you can just
turn far away.

About Aussie

Aussie is a regular contributor to Mission FireFly.

I like writing, what can I say? It's not like I can just sit down anytime and do it, though. It's a mood thing. Somedays it comes and somedays it goes. I also like art (more on the modern side) and writing my own songs.
