The Creaking Door
He was a great biologist,
He knew the whales very well.
The species were his deity,
His birth was with them in the swell.
He yearned to learn their unknown speech, To banter with them only brief.
A boat he bought with all his cash,
And then he sailed past the reef.
Orion was his guardian,
Against the sun and cunning sea.
He never ventured down below,
But stayed in one place like a tree.
He heard faint moanings from his perch,
And he deciphered them with care.
The whales hoped for food sans krill,
And even said a nightly prayer.
He went home very happily,
And soon the shoreline came in view.
Then whales’ voices came again,
Above the gusty wind that blew.
He found these calls quite out of place.
He learned of something to his horror.
He realized the whales’ cries,
Were really just a creaking door.
