Adventures of a Darkened Moon
Chapter 1: Flash Back
“Mom, Dad, Justin, I’m home!” I said wearily walking through the door. It was another rough day in kindergarten for this hyperactive 4 year old. “Mom? Dad? Justin?” I said walking into the living room. I screamed as I surveyed the scene. I dropped my schoolbooks and ran to my parents and brother, who lay murdered on the couch. I didn’t understand the danger I was in.
I ran into the kitchen and grabbed the phone off the table. I quickly dialed 911.
“Hello, 911 What seems to be the problem?” asked the operator
“My Mommy, Daddy, and big brother Justin are dead on the couch and I think that man is still here. I thought I heard him” I spoke hurriedly into the phone
“Where are you at?” she asked typing on the computer
“The kitchen” I said confused
“No, what is your house address?” She said speaking tenderly
“Ummm… the numbers are 133 and the words are Kings Court, big blue house.” I spoke timidly
“Alright the police will be right over.”
I hung up the phone as a man grabbed me.
“You’ve got quite a nerve calling you’re friends at a time like this,” he said casually with his hand over my mouth.
I bit him “You’re in big trouble mister!” kicked him in the leg.
“Why you little… Come here!” he lounged at me
“No way!” I ran through the house towards my room.
He pulled himself up and came up the stairs. “Where are you ya little brat?” he headed into my room. He looked under the bed, in the closet, and in every possible hiding place you could think of in such a small room. “I know you’re in here! Come out and I’ll make it quick and painless” he said standing in the middle of the room. He saw a flash come from the closet. He lunged into the closet, not knowing about the secret door leading to my brothers’ room. Just then, he heard the sirens approaching and ran.
I came out when I saw the police officer. “Little girl, are you okay?” he asked picking me up in his arms.
“Yes, I’m okay. That man ran away when he heard you coming.” I said sadly. My face perked up “Oh yeah! Be right back” I crawled back into the closet and grabbed my moms’ camera “Here. I took a picture of him when I was hiding. I learned how to do that in class today!”
He took the camera from me and thanked me. “So what’s you’re name? I’m police officer Mitchell.”
“My name is Samantha, and I’m a 4 year old preschool girl!”
He buckled me up in the back of his police car. “You’re such a big girl, not crying or anything!”
“Thank you very much! Mommy and Daddy always told me; when the going gets tough, little girls just have to get tougher!” Soon we pulled up to the police station.
I don’t know how long I had been sitting there when I heard the officers talking.
“What do we do with her?” I looked towards them curiously.
“I don’t know. Nobody wants her!” said the taller, black haired cop.
“No one? There has to be someone. Did you try Old Granny Crocker? How about old Tom? Anyone? We can’t send a four-year-old to boarding school!” said Officer Mitchell.
“No one wants her. We’ll have to take her to the orphanage. That’s the best we can do.”
For some reason Officer Mitchell looked sad. He came over and picked me up.
“Are we riding in your car again Mr. Misshell?” I asked.
“Yeah. One more time. Do you have your things?” He asked trying hard to smile
“Yep, everything is right here.” I said holding up a backpack full of clothes, my toothbrush, a brush and comb, and my teddy bear Patch.
“Come on Kiddo” said the troubled cop.
“Is something wrong Mr. Misshell?” I asked as he carried me to the orphanage.
“You’re going to have a great life here Samantha. There will always be many kids to play with, but you’ll have to follow many rules. There will only be one Mommy to take care of you, and you have to call her Ms. Bean, okay? Promise me you won’t get into any trouble okay?” He said putting me down in front of the orphanage.
“OK Mr. Misshell, I promise.”
I didn’t understand anything about the hard life I had in front of me. I watched as Officer Mitchell drove away. I would never be prepared for what was ahead of me.
