Chapter Two
Two Weeks Later
Scarlett opened up her laptop eagerly signing into her e-mail, hoping that Gabe had replied to her last e-mail. She was excited to tell him about the basket-ball game her team had just won. When her inbox finally loaded she saw that there were two e-mails from Gabe. The subject lines were strange though. One was titled “Good-Bye” and the other, “Some Terrible News”. Panic filled Scarlett as she opened “Some Terrible News” first, praying harder than she ever had before that it wasn’t what she thought it was. Tears filled her eyes as she read the worst letter she’d ever received;
Dear Friends and Family of Gabriel,
I am so sorry to tell you that Gabriel Schoken is no longer with us. Last night, his mother walked in to his bedroom to find that he had hung himself with an eletrical cord. We are so sorry for this loss that you all have sufferd. The funeral is being held at 2:00 pm on July 23, 2009 at Century Medows church in Haven,Alberta. I hope you will all be there.
Sincerely,
John Williams
Friend of the Schoken family
Scarlett’s tears were freely flowing now as her heart broke in two. She knew that the letter entitled “Good-Bye” was going to hurt. Slowly she moved the mouse to select the letter. Opening it, she wiped her tears to be able to see his words.
Dear Scarlett,
First off, I am sorry. I know that this is going to hurt you the most. I want to thank you for a few things. Thank you for being my best friend and for always being there when I needed you. You were the best person I had in my life, and you are the only reason I regret doing what I am about to do. I am so miserable here though. I can’t deal with the pressure of school and the problems in my family. I hope that you don’t blame God and please know that I am in such a better place now. I love you.
Love,
Gabe
“No, oh God please no!” she screamed and threw her laptop off the bed. Her worst fear had finally come true. He was really gone this time. He wasn’t just depressed. There would be no more fun times, no more late nights on the phone, no more best friend. It was over. Her best friend was gone and she had no one left in the world. “What I am going to do?” she sobbed as she slammed her head into her pillow and cried herself to sleep.
