Governor Smythe watched Davena disappear on the path to her family's house before rounding up the townspeople to tell them about the hurricane. Now, he finished boarding up the last window of his house on the inside and sat down at his desk. Davena really was an extraordinary girl, but most of the townspeople refused to see that. He wondered what they would do if they knew that she was the one who spotted all the hurricanes with enough time for them to prepare. They were only prejudiced against her because of her eyes. They were so dark that, at a glance, they looked amost black. But when the sunlight of moonlight reflected in them, you could see that one eye was deepest blue, and the other was darkest purple.
Together, her eyes with her black hair had convinced the townspeople that she was a changeling, fey, fairy. He and his wife alone knew her story, besides her family. A changeling was a fairy child exchanged for a human child. Davena's family might have had two children when they found her on their doorstep, but no child was taken to be replaced. What Davena really was remained a mystery, even to Davena herself.
Davena and her family were sitting in their living room area waiting out the hurricane, when three loud Bangs! sounded on their door.
Davena got to the door first and struggled to keep the wind from tearing it out of her hands. Two men and a young woman stood outside, gripping the doorframe. Her father appeared behind her.
"May we help you?" he said, a bit loudly to be heard over the wind.
"The governor sent us here," one of the men said. "Our ship is docked here and the rest of the crew has been split among homes in town."
"By all means, come in," her father said. Davena let go of the door at this point, and the wind blew it all the way up against the wall. The strangers came in, and Davena's father forced the door shut and bolted it.
He and Davena's older brothers, David and Joshua, brought in chairs from the dining room for their guests.
"Have a seat, make yourselves comfortable," her father said to them. Davena silently took her seat between the twins, David and Joshua. After a moment of silence, the one who had spoken earlier, now wearing a salt-covered hat, spoke up.
"I'm Captain Ian Gilchrist," he said, "but please call me Ian."
The other man spoke up. "Will Lamport."
"Elissa Summers," the young woman said.
"Very nice to meet you," Davena's father said. "I'm Robert Kinsleigh."
"James."
"David."
"Joshua."
"Bryan." Her brothers spoke in deadened tones.
"I'm Bethany,"her mother said, then nodded towards Davena. "and this is--"
"Davena," she offered quietly.
"Are you the one the governor said spotted the storm?" Elissa asked her.
"Yes."
"You have very good eyesight."
"Thank you." Davena did not meet Elissa's eyes for fear of her own being discovered. Her father noticed this and subtly changed the subject.
"It helps that she's a fast runner, too," he said smilingly.
"So you've spotted the hurricanes that far off before?" Will asked. Davena nodded.
"There's always the usual damage like fallen trees," she said, " but at least we have enough time to board up windows and bring things inside in time."
They grew silent, listening to the wind roaring outside. Bryan and James started a small conversation between the brothers, and for awhile, they watched them talk back and forth in silence. Davena couldn't help but notice that she was under a very close scrutiny from Captain Gilchrist (no, Ian, she thought). He studied her with the look of someone who was trying to figure something out. Those looks always scared her. They usually meant that the person knew something about her that she didn't.
