A continuing story by Alesha: Chapter 2
He watched her travel down the road in silence. Then he started to follow, knowing that he would be needed soon.
Emma drove up to the grocery store, parked and got out. Closing her car door she felt a shiver run up her spine. “Silly rain.” She mumbled under her breath. Hurrying so that she wouldn’t miss out on the pie, she failed to notice the faint glimmer of light behind her.
Once she was in the store she located the frozen foods isle and picked out a bucket of vanilla ice cream. As she made her way to the counter she dug around in her purse for her credit card and in the process knocked her keys out. Bending down to pick them up, she glanced to her right, and noticed a man wearing a faded Toronto Blue Jays jacket. He was standing behind the woman at the counter and was next in line. She could only see the back of his head but noticed that he was fidgeting with his hands. They kept on going in and out of his pockets. Feeling uncomfortable, she glanced to see if any other counters were open. The one to the far right was. So she decided to switch lanes.
But just as she crossed over she heard yelling behind her and pounding of feet. Whipping around, she felt a hard object collided with her right shoulder that sent her spinning. She crashed into the shelf beside her and felt a sharp pain shoot up her spine. Gasping from the pain she looked up and saw the man who had been wearing the Blue Jays jacket tackle a young boy of about 17.
Struggling to stand, Emma grasped the shelf beside her and pulled herself up. Unsure of what to do and mind still reeling from the pain, she stumbled toward them. She watched in amazement as the boy slipped out from under the man and pulled out a loaded pistol.
It was like watching a movie in slow motion. The man just laid there looking at the boy with such kindness. The boy was obviously shaken and was waving the pistol around; everyone was screaming and falling to the floor.
Then the boy looked straight at her the gun swung in her direction. Staring down that barrel was like looking death in the face.
She tore her gaze away from the barrel of the gun and looked straight into the boys’ eyes. They were some of the bluest eyes she had ever seen. And right now they were filled with fear and uncertainty.
Realizing that she was still moving toward him, she stopped. They stared at each other for what seemed the longest time. The gun slowly began to lower.
Then all of a sudden out of nowhere, a man, probably one of the ones who had been working the till, tackled the boy from behind, then a loud “CRACK!” split the air. Emma watched as the boys eyes widened in horror. Somewhere a woman screamed. Emma looked down and saw a large red spot appear in the area of her stomach. She felt arms catch her as she fell. The feeling was going out of her legs, and her vision was becoming blurred around the edges.
The last thing she saw was the man in the blue jays jacket looking down into her face with the kindest and most comforting eyes she had ever seen, and she could swear he was glowing as he said, “Do not be afraid, it is not yet your time.”
And as her vision faded altogether, she felt a wonderful peace wrap itself around her soul, and she thought to herself as she left consciousness, “so this is what it’s like to die...I guess I’ll never get to have a piece of mammas’ pie...” and then she giggled softly to herself, “that rhymed!” and all went black.
