When she returned home she sank into the worn yellow chair in the lounge. Dusk had just passed and the night stared ahead. Thoughts flew through her head. Of the past and of the future. But the present was too hard to bare. What was she going to do? She didn’t know any other family; her father had left when she was young. Also she was still at school. Just finishing off her GCSEs. Sure she was 16 now; legally she could live by herself. But not here. Not only would there been memories. Of this treacherous day. But a mortgage, utility bills, taxes etc. How would a 16 year old afford these things when she didn’t even have a job? Or rich dead uncle?
She sighed. Her dry eyes fluttered closed. She soon drifted into a dream.
A person? She looked up. A person stood in front of her. “Who?” She asked. But they swiftly turned. “Wait!” She yelled. Intrigued. She watched their shadow walk. She began to walk towards them, her walked turned into a trot. Her legs then stretched out and she ran. She was desperate to catch up with this stranger. But fog swirled around her. It thickened the deeper she ran. There was something about this person, something she had to know. But she couldn’t get to him. The world slowed down. She beat at the fog but it taunted her. Soon she was unable to go any further. The fog blinded her and surrounded her until she couldn’t breathe.
“What?” She cried out as she jerked up. The morning sun snuck through the blinds and hit her with a small tinge of heat. Hoping out of her chair she ran into her garden. She felt uneasy about something. But, strangely it wasn’t about her Mother. The dream. There was something so real and frightening about it. She had had lots of odd dreams before. But none felt so real before. But no. Surely a dream cannot mean anything? Could it? Confused she walked onto the decking. Something was not right. She was never a girl of any beliefs.
She had been brought up to believe what could be proven. To believe in what human curiosity tells us what should logically make sense. But she always had questions. When those questions were answered, the answers were questioned. She never believed it could be possible for a God to exist. If he did why did bad things happen? Then if bad things happen because of Satan, how come he exists? Nothing ever occurred to her that you don’t need to know everything, to know everything. Such as we all know the wind is there. So why have complicated instruments to prove it? Plus we all know there are people and living things around us, so who cares if some ‘clever’ scientists say we are just random blobs of energy. If that’s true why don’t we just plug our ipods and things into ourselves? In the end, nothing makes sense really. Which is just one of many things she will learn.
